Pregnancy is a short chapter, and the beach is one of the most beautiful places to remember it. Soft light, open sky and the sound of waves create a calm, natural setting that suits every style. At Vid’s Photography, I often meet families searching for maternity photography Western Sydney locals can trust, who also dream of a beach maternity photo with an ocean backdrop. Sydney has so many stunning beaches that choosing one can feel overwhelming, so here are my favourite locations, each suited to a different mood.
Why the Beach Works So Well
Water reflects sunlight and gives your skin a gentle glow. Sand, sky and sea make a simple, uncluttered backdrop, so nothing competes with you or your bump.
A photo shoot of pregnancy at the beach also feels very different from one in a studio. There are no walls or fixed backdrops, so the breeze and open space help you forget the camera and enjoy the moment. Many of my clients tell me the pregnant woman photo session by the ocean became a highlight of their whole pregnancy, not just a set of pictures.

Bondi Beach: Bold and Iconic
Bondi is the beach everyone recognises. The sweeping curve of sand and the Icebergs Pool make a striking backdrop for confident, editorial portraits. It faces east, so sunrise light is beautiful, and the sand is quietest early in the morning.
Palm Beach: Dreamy and Cinematic
With its lighthouse, headland and long stretch of sand, Palm Beach feels like a film set. It is further from the city, so allow extra travel time. If you want a small escape from everyday life, it is worth the drive.
Manly Beach: Easy and Relaxed
Manly suits couples who prefer a casual feel. The sand is wide, so you can walk and chat while I photograph natural moments, and your images end up looking genuine rather than posed. It is also easy to reach by ferry, which makes the journey part of the fun.
Camp Cove: Soft and Sheltered
Camp Cove, near Watsons Bay, is a small harbour beach with calm water and a quiet atmosphere. It is a lovely option in your third trimester, when you would like a short walk and a gentler pace.

Nielsen Park: Green and Peaceful
Nielsen Park in Vaucluse blends sand with shady trees and parkland. The leaves soften the light and keep skin tones warm and even, and the nearby grass gives you somewhere comfortable to sit between shots.
Bronte Beach: Texture and Drama
Bronte’s rocky edges and natural pools add depth you cannot get on flat sand. Dark rock against the soft curves of pregnancy creates a beautiful contrast. The footing needs care, so I plan poses slowly and keep you supported throughout.
Coogee Beach: Family and Fun
Coogee has gentle waves, ocean pools and a welcoming feel for children. If older siblings are joining in, this is where I would take you. Their cuddles against your bump often become the most treasured frames in the album.
Freshwater Beach: Golden and Gentle
Freshwater has warm-toned sand and softly rolling waves, which suits light, airy images. Choose it if you want photos that feel timeless rather than trendy.

What to Check Before Your Beach Session
A few small details make the day far more comfortable:
- Walking distance from parking. Carrying shoes, a gown and a bag across sand is tiring when you are pregnant.
- Wind and weather. A light breeze moves fabric beautifully, but a strong one is uncomfortable, so it helps to keep a backup date.
- Direction of the sun. It shapes the whole look of your photos, so choose the time of day around your beach.
- Tide times. Low tide usually means more sand and safer footing near rocks.
An experienced maternity photographer will handle these details and help you choose the location, the time of day and an outfit that suits the setting, so you can simply enjoy the day.
Not Just for Pregnancy
The beach suits every kind of love story. Recently I photographed a couple who married at 60 and wanted a relaxed, pressure-free session by the sea. You can read their story in my blog on a post-wedding photoshoot at a Sydney beach. The stage of life was different, but the ocean brought out the same honest emotion.
Prefer to Stay Closer to Home?
Not every mum-to-be wants a long drive, and that is completely fine. A maternity photoshoot in Western Sydney can be just as lovely at a local park, in a garden or even in your own backyard. Good pregnancy photography is less about the place and more about feeling comfortable, supported and confident in front of the camera.
